About

A practical exploration of common mentor-mentee pitfalls and strategies to enhance the mentor-mentee relationship.

While mentorship is essential for career advancement, it is often informal, inconsistent, and shaped by unspoken expectations. From navigating sponsorship and visibility to managing expectations and power dynamics, even well-intentioned mentorship relationships can fall short without structure and a shared understanding.

Led by Dr. Reem Mustafa, a nationally recognized leader in evidence-based medicine in clinical and public health decision making, this session draws on her experience in mentorship, leadership development, and advancing women in nephrology. She brings both a systems-level perspective and practical, real-world insight into how mentorship can be redesigned to better support diverse career paths and promote professional development.

What You’ll Learn

    • Discuss common mentorship pitfalls in academic nephrology, particularly those affecting women and how this may impact career progression
    • Learn practical strategies to build intentional, effective mentor-mentee relationships, including setting expectations, seeking sponsorship, and navigating challenges
    • Explore approaches to creating more strategic mentorship structures within nephrology professional practice
